With the up coming GST rise to 7%, a man has taken a uniquely Singapore approach by recycling condoms. He would have washed them and then took them out hanging outside to dry. This unsightly sight was viewed by many to be disgusting with one pointing out that some of the condoms have turned brownish in colour. This article was picked up by The Star, a newspaper from Malaysia.
Are Singaporeans that kiasu in wanting to save some money or was there another reason for the recycling exercise?

HANGING laundry out to dry from a flat window may be acceptable, but condoms?
A Singaporean high-rise dweller is said to have resorted to recycling used condoms by “air-drying” them from the window of his flat, according to a report in China Press.
More than 100 used condoms were put out to dry, according to a disgusted neighbour.
The woman, known as Tan, was quoted in the daily as describing the act as “gross and disgusting”.
“This is sickening. You can see from afar that some of the condoms had turned brownish,” she said, adding that the unit belonged to a middle-aged man living with his wife and two children.
Tan, who has been staying there for more than 20 years, said the act should not have been allowed by the authorities as it was unhygienic, especially when it rained.
“Rain water will be dripping from the condoms onto pedestrians walking on the ground below,” she pointed out.

1. That’s disgusting. Condoms are not designed to be reusable.
2. Are you honestly suggesting that he’s doing this because GST is planned to go up next year? Talk about getting screwed…
Elia:
1. yeah, it is rather disturbing and disgusting that he is reusing it. it would reduce the efficacy of a condom as both a contraceptive device and prevention of transmission of STD.
2. No, of course not. Hehehe, I was just trying to kill two birds with one stones. Somehow this is actually unrelated to GST. But to highlight GST can cause abnormal behaviour. hehehe, hope you see the light side of it
Way to go! A dollar saved is a dollar earned. Innovation for the new Singaporean.
Obviously the washing has no effect on the effectiveness of the condoms. He still only has 2 kids, which is still below the national required average. Unless of course if he is only a PSLE holder, which them makes him 2 above his alotted quota.
er, i seriously doubt the validity of that article. there’s no mention of location. which part of malaysia or singapore did it happen?
ask yourself, why was the nationality of the alleged disgusting man highlighted such that it is the first thing the writer tells us about this him? how does the writer know his nationality?
i fear it’s just a smear campaign
harro: hahaha, with his hanging out the condom, I think he is over the quota and hence the effectiveness of the condom has to be questioned!
chiongster: this article was published by a Singapore Chinese newspaper initially with photos taken of highrise building. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to read chinese and hence the need to refer to an external source.
