No matter how you look at the results, one thing is clear, no matter how the BN tries very to gerrymander the seats, the people can speak at the polling station. And when the wind change, the people are determined to make those changes.
In the previous Singapore election, you could easily feel the wind of change on the internet and blogosphere. Even more so than the current one in Malaysia. The 30,000 plus people who attended PAP’s rally in Penang is comparable to those that the opposition had gartner in Singapore but yet those in Singapore who attended did not translate them to votes.
I see and hear how much people wanted changes in Singapore but yet when it comes to the actual day, they would instinctively vote for the incumbent ruling government. The other 33% who did not vote for PAP feel sore at how they had been cheated by the general public who wanted to give PAP a very much reduced majority.
As for Malaysia’s election, no one in their sane mind would predict what had happened. The opposition is still trying to work out how they will rule Selangor and Perak, states which they never knew they could win. There were STRONG BN states. How did this really happened? The swing in chinese and indian voters played a very important role in this outcast.
So will PAP continue with their landslide victory the next time around? Or will Singapore with its large legian of bloggers do a Jeff Ooi and enter politics? Or will they be scared by the authority?
A new day has dawn in Malaysia and democracy is definitely well and alive in Malaysia.
